On June 24th, 2022, AirX had a safety stand-down meeting at Dixon Lake in Escondido, CA. Safety is a priority to AirX every day and has regular weekly meetings with staff on hand and emails are sent out to all staff with the topics covered. This event brought all the AirX staff together to collectively go over some important safety topics.
We discussed one of the leading causes of workplace injuries which is back injuries. Did you know back injuries are the leading cause of work-related disabilities for people under the age of 45? Every job whether you are in the office, or the field can have an impact on your back. You need to make sure you are lifting properly, carrying, and setting down objects correctly and that you practice good ergonomics when it comes to just sitting at your desk.
Repetitive tasks can lead to back pain and injuries, especially if not done properly. We went over what you can do to prevent back injuries such as posture, lifting techniques, avoiding heavy lifting, lifting with a partner, staying active, stretching, and strength training. We also talked about preventing slips, trips, and falls by practicing good housekeeping. Hearing protection while on the job as well as proper use of power tools was reviewed with the staff.
We also discussed some of the technologies and apps we currently are using such as Survey123, ArcGIS, and Trimble. To streamline our reports process and lower our carbon footprint we utilize Survey123 to document our potholing process into a digital report for our clients. We discussed how the photos we take are used to generate a report for our clients. We are also rolling out Samsara to not only track the driving of our drivers but will also streamline our DVIRs and track the location of our fleet.
Safety Tailgate Sheets dedicated to the construction industry are included for you to use at your company safety meetings. Some broad and good topics this month, and as always these are great reminders for your employees and/or subs and they serve as a good tool for documentation purposes. English and Spanish copies are available along with quizzes and answer keys.
The topics for July are:
- Prevent Back Injuries
- Heart Attack
Independence Day is right around the corner
Picnics, parades, BBQs, family, and friends are getting together to celebrate the 4th of July. Make sure to have fun celebrating. And please do so with care. California is in the midst of a severe drought. Follow your city’s rules and regulations regarding backyard fireworks. Inconsistent laws across the state create a confusing situation where you can buy legally in a town, but if you bring them into another city that bans them, you’re breaking the law.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 19,500 reported fires are started by fireworks annually, and burns account for 44% of the 9,100 injuries treated in emergency rooms the month before July 4th.
